Sapote Milkshake - Batido de Sapote



This past weekend we went to the Indian Grocery store to pickup some pantry staples like rice, spices, and frozen goods. As we were walking by one frozen case, Kishore stopped and says, "Ah Babe, Chikoo! I ate this as a kid, can you make this milkshake!?" I told him sure but I didn't know what kind of fruit it was and he says in Telugu they call it Sapota...lightbulb moment I know what Sapote is sure I can!

Sapota or 'Zapote' is the Spanish take on the traditional Nahuatl word to describe this soft sweet fruit - 'Tzapotl'. Sapote also called sapodilla, sapota, chikoo or nispero is a fruiting tree native to Central America, that was ultimately introduced to India and South East Asia by the Spanish.
This is one of my Mom's favorite milkshakes (batidos); it has a deliciously rich caramel flavor without being cloyingly sweet. 
Here's my recipe:

Sapote Milkshake - Batido de Sapote

Cooking for Kishore

Ingpastredients

  • 2 Cups Frozen Sapote(Chikoo), peeled & cubed
  • 2 Cups Oat Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Cold Water
  • 2 Cups Ice

Instructions

  1. Puree in the blender, the sapote and water.
  2. Add the milk and the ice and blend till thick. Enjoy!
Yield: Serves 4-6

Cook time: 5 mins.
